The FEX-2M Encoder/Decoder by Yaesu is a popular choice for amateur radio operators who use CTCSS (Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System) for their communications. Here are some pros and cons to consider before making a purchase:
Pros:1. Reliability: Yaesu is a well-known and reputable brand in the amateur radio community, so you can expect high-quality construction and performance from this encoder.
2. Compatibility: The FEX-2M is compatible with a wide range of Yaesu transceivers, making it a versatile option for those who already have Yaesu equipment.
3. Programmability: The FEX-2M allows you to program up to 1024 CTCSS tones, giving you a lot of flexibility in your communications.
4. Durability: The encoder is built to withstand rough handling, making it a good choice for portable use.
5. Affordable: Compared to some other encoder/decoders on the market, the FEX-2M is relatively affordable.
Cons:1. Limited frequency range: The FEX-2M only operates in the 136-174 MHz and 400-480 MHz frequency ranges, which may not be suitable for all amateur radio operators.
2. No digital display: The encoder does not have a digital display, which can make it difficult to see the current frequency or tone being used.
3. Limited programming options: While the FEX-2M allows you to program up to 1024 CTCSS tones, some other encoder/decoders offer more advanced programming options.
4. Limited connectivity: The FEX-2M only has a single 3.5mm jack for connecting to a transceiver, so it may not be suitable for those who want to use multiple radios simultaneously.
Conclusion:The FEX-2M Encoder/Decoder by Yaesu is a reliable and affordable option for amateur radio operators who need CTCSS encoding and decoding capabilities. Its durability and compatibility with Yaesu transceivers are major advantages, but its limited frequency range and lack of advanced programming options may be drawbacks for some users. Ultimately, whether or not the FEX-2M is the right choice for you depends on your specific needs and preferences as an amateur radio operator.
Recommendation:If you are looking for a reliable and affordable CTCSS encoder/decoder and already have Yaesu equipment, the FEX-2M is a great choice. However, if you need more advanced programming options or a wider frequency range, you may want to consider other encoder/decoders on the market.
