This fan is added to the transceiver without even removing any covers. This fan can be used even if an external tuner is in use since the fan has a pass thru cable and connector to interface with an external tuner.
This is an accessory for the 718 and 78. If the radio is nested in a console with poor ventilation and other sources of heat, the fan is highly recommended. When used, warm air is drawn from the cabinet and cooler air enters the cabinet through the slots elsewhere in the cabinet.
